Background:
The Washington Way
A strong ethic of service to others. A strong work ethic. A great and good state.
Goal Statement
Before laying out an agenda for reform, we need to ask ourselves, what is our goal? What kind of people do we want to be? What kind of economy do we want to have?
Culturally, Washington is a place where people care about their neighbors, are respectful to one another, and help one another. We believe in doing things that are larger than ourselves and our own self-interest. Loving our neighbors is a virtue we take seriously and live by. Grass-roots efforts can make a difference in your community. Let Olympia know what is important to you. Sign your support to the Economic Action Plan.
Economically, Washington needs to attract the best jobs in the world and the best companies in the world by having the best educated, best skilled people in the world. We need to proactively teach the work ethic, and protect and expand the middle class. That means more economic security for Washington’s families, and more people who are working, self-reliant, earning a solid living, and raising a successful family.
For quality of life, Washingtonians have always balanced work, play, and family. Here, the economy exists for the people, not vice versa. We need to make sure our skills and work ethic make us the world’s most sought-after workers. And we need to balance this with plenty of time for family, and for enjoying the fact that we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
We are a great and powerful state because we have a powerful, diverse, global economy. The foundation of that economy is the quality of our goods and services, due to the productivity, education, and workplace skills of our people.
We are a good state because we don't stop at economic excellence, but also reach out to help all people achieve a balanced lifestyle, with good careers, supportive families, and a rich and enjoyable quality of life. You can helpacheive this goal by letting your govorner and legislature know you support the Economic Action Plan .
What Washington is Not
- We are not the cheapest place in the world, where the cheapest companies create the cheapest jobs.
- We are not a workaholic culture, where work defines and consumes you. We are highly productive and competitive, and we also value time for family, leisure, and quality of life.
- We are not a welfare state. People are expected to work and pull their weight, and we actively help people gain a strong work ethic, work experience, workplace skills, and secure careers.
- We are not selfish. For the truly vulnerable who cannot work, we will help. For those who can work, but need help getting into a career, we will help. Helping our neighbors help themselves is the right thing to do, with the guiding principle of, “Give a person a fish, feed them for a day; teach a person to fish, feed them for a lifetime.” Use your voice to help your neighbors when you sign your name to show your support of the Economic Action Plan .
